There is a critical need to effectively communicate with and educate the key stakeholders and constituents involved with transportation of individuals who use wheelchairs but do not transfer to the vehicle seat.

In the January 2005 the State of the Science (SoS) meeting for Wheelchair Transportation Safety, the lack of knowledge about the existence and need for transportation safety technology standards and products was identified as the number one barrier! This barrier rated equally with the lack of understanding of basic principles of transportation safety and occupant protection. Educating key constituents was named as the highest-ranked strategy for improving motor-vehicle transportation for wheelchair users. It is also the basis for several of the other strategies, such as mandating the use of transportation safety technology (TST) products. See the final summary document from the SoS meeting here containing the prioritized summary statements.
