FAQ C12

Do I always need to replace a WC19 wheelchair following a crash or sudden stop?

No. A good rule of thumb is that components of a wheelchair may need to be replaced if it was in a crash severe enough that the vehicle had to be towed from the scene, i.e., in a “tow-away crash.” However, this does not mean that the complete wheelchair must be replaced, and it may not mean that any components need to be replaced. It is, however, important that the wheelchair manufacturer and/or wheelchair prescriber be consulted following a tow-away crash to determine the extent of structural damage, if any. WC19 is currently silent on the issue of replacing a wheelchair or its components following a crash
