FAQ D3

Question D-3: Is it OK to use postural and positioning belts when traveling while seated in my wheelchair?

Yes. Although they may not be designed to offer protection in a crash, any type of restraint is better than no restraint at all. In lower severity crashes, they can help reduce occupant movement, which can reduce the risk of injury from contacting vehicle interior components. In a severe crash, the design of positioning belts could result in thoracic or abdominal injuries. However, if you also use a crash-tested vehicle-anchored restraint sysem with both upper torso and pelvic belts, that should minimize the effect of postural belts.
